Honest Whiskers exists because most “best cat gear” content online is either recycled spec sheets or paid placement dressed up as a review. We do it differently: deep research, honest verdicts, and total transparency about what we have and haven’t done ourselves.
We are research-led, not lab-tested
We want to be upfront about this: Honest Whiskers does not buy, test, or live with every product we cover. We’re not a product-testing lab, and we’ll never pretend to be. What we do is dig deeper than a typical roundup: we read full manufacturer specifications, cross-check owner reviews for real-world patterns (not just star ratings), and lean on independent testing from outlets that do put products through their paces — cats.com, The Spruce Pets, Wirecutter, and Forbes Vetted among them.
Our process, step by step
- Start with the real problem. Most “best of” lists are written around head keywords. We start with the situations that actually make choosing hard — a three-cat household, a 16lb Maine Coon, a studio apartment with nowhere to hide a litter box — because that’s where a specific, honest recommendation is worth the most.
- Build a long list. We pull together every genuinely relevant option in a category, then verify each one is a real, currently-available product — not a discontinued model or a lookalike.
- Check the specs against the manufacturer. Every capacity, dimension, and claimed feature we publish is checked against the manufacturer’s own listing, not copied from another blog.
- Screen for safety. We check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) database for active recalls before we recommend anything. If something’s been recalled, it comes off the list — or gets a clear warning.
- Weigh owner experience. We read through owner reviews looking for repeated patterns — reliability complaints, sizing surprises, things that only show up after weeks of real use — not just the star average.
- Rank honestly. Where we mention our own affiliate partners (like Litter-Robot), we hold them to the same criteria as everyone else. We do not put a product first because it pays us more.
No fabricated experience
We will never write “we tested this for three months” if we didn’t. If we ever do get genuine hands-on time with a product, we’ll say so plainly and tell you what that testing involved. Until then, every verdict is built from research, not roleplay.
Cat health content
Michael, our founder, is an experienced lifelong pet owner — including cats — but he is not a veterinarian. Any content that touches cat health, food, or safety is written from research and reputable sources (like the ASPCA and veterinary literature), and it’s general information, not veterinary advice. Always check with your vet about your own cat.
We update our picks
Products get discontinued, recalled, or replaced by newer models. We revisit our best-of pages on a regular schedule to keep price bands, availability, and safety information current.
