Beagle

Buying the Best Dog Food for Beagles

When selecting your Beagle’s dog food, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind.

Below, we’ll be discussing some of the nutrients you Beagle needs, some ingredients to avoid, and some of the common health problems they face.

Beagle Dietary Needs

Beagles mostly have the same nutritional needs as other breeds. However, there are a few distinct differences.

Easily Digestible Carbohydrates

Dogs don’t need carbohydrates in their diet. But a little isn’t a bad thing. In fact, some scientific studies have shown that the amount of carbohydrates required by dogs is relatively minute. [7]

The best sources of carbs come from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. For example, in our recommendations above, you may have seen that some formulas include whole brown rice.

You should avoid a diet with refined grains such as white rice. These don’t have much nutritional benefit for dogs. They’re mainly used as fillers to bulk out the dog food.

Dietary fibers are the best types of fillers in dog foods. And it’s common to find them in weight control diets for obese pups.

Moderate Amounts of Healthy Fats

As humans, we automatically associate fatty ingredients as a leading cause of weight gain.

However, some studies have shown that dogs need plenty of it. And they should be your canine’s primary source of calories the majority of the time.

Your Beagle’s food should contain at least 10% fat content. You can always check the food label for this. But, the more fat their food has, the better.

Unfortunately, Beagles are vulnerable to weight gain reasonably quickly. So you must monitor the amount of food your pup is getting daily and ensure you follow the food manufacturer or veterinarian recommendations.

If you are currently considering a specific dog food for your Beagle, look for ingredients like salmon oil. This contains high concentrations of healthy fats like omega fatty acids, which improve skin and coat, support vision and brain development, and protect joints, bones, and hips.

High Amounts of High-Quality Protein

Protein is the basic foundation of any canine’s diet. And this is especially true for Beagles. They need it to help maintain their muscle mass and stay healthy.

Beagles need approximately 25% to 35% protein in their dog food. But if your Beagle lives a more active lifestyle, they’ll require more.

We always recommend that their protein comes from a high-quality animal source. This is because they contain high levels of amino acids and nutrients that’ll support your pup’s body.

The best animal sources are whole meats, but named meat meals are great for Beagles.

The exact type of meat isn’t essential. Just so long as your Beagle isn’t allergic to it. There isn’t much difference between your Beagle eating dog food containing chicken or them eating one with beef.

And while some will suggest meat meals are less nutritional than real meats, some actually contain more nutrients per ounce. So it can be an excellent source of protein and added nutrients for pups.

Vitamins & Minerals

Dogs need specific amounts of vitamins and minerals to live a happy, healthy life. The same goes for Beagles too.

But this can vary depending on the dog’s life stage, for example, if they’re a puppy or adult. Luckily, the AAFCO regulates the required nutrients needed for each life stage, which most dog foods will adhere to.

Generally, Beagle puppies will need more protein and healthy fats to support their rapid growth and development. Nutrients like calcium and glucosamine are also crucial for a Beagle puppy’s diet. Plus, they need plenty of omega fatty acids in their food too.

Whereas senior Beagles will need slightly less protein and fats. But specific nutrients like glucosamine, chondroitin, and taurine go be hugely beneficial for them.

Most of us automatically associate Beagles as a small dog breed. But they’re not. And unfortunately, because of how their weight is distributed across their bodies, they can suffer from joint conditions later in life. Nutrients like glucosamine and omega fatty acids will go a long way in preventing this.

Avoid giving your Beagle small breed dog foods. These don’t have the necessary nutrients they need and can cause severe health problems.

Common Health Problems

While relatively healthy, Beagles can suffer from a few health problems. Some can be effectively managed through a complete, balanced diet.

Glaucoma & Eye Complications

Beagles can often face various eye problems, such as Inherited Glaucoma. This is when there’s a mutation in the eye, which causes pressure on it. And as the name suggests, it’s genetic and gradually worsens over time.

If left untreated, it can result in nerve damage, lens subluxation, vision loss, and even blindness.

A complete diet will only go so far. Unfortunately, this disease is in our Beagle’s DNA. However, some things can be done to try and prevent it.

For example, vitamin E deficiencies frequently lead to glaucoma. So if your Beagle is already vulnerable to it, then making sure they’re getting enough of this essential vitamin can play a crucial part. [8]

Weight Issues

Beagles can quickly become obese. Once they’re fully grown, they tend to become somewhat lazy and don’t exercise as much as usual. So it’s easy for them to add on the extra pounds.

Obesity is a growing problem, and more and more veterinarians are becoming concerned. And even the odd pound or two over their ideal weight can make a massive difference to Beagles.

Most of the time, regular exercise and a complete, balanced diet are the best way to combat obesity. You should also avoid free-feeding Beagles, as they’re known to be opportunistic feeders and tend to overeat.

Always follow the feeding guidelines on your Beagle’s food or your vet’s recommendation regarding how much food you should feed them.

Beagles that struggle with managing their weight can try a diet with high fiber content. This nutrient can help your Beagle feel full for longer and ultimately make them eat less. [9]

Plus, if your Beagle struggles with their weight, then select a low-fat diet for them instead. Dietary fat can be a leading cause of obesity for dogs.  [10]

But bear in mind, this is only if you’ve noticed them gaining a bit more weight than usual. Keep an eye on their body condition score and make adjustments when you feel it’s necessary.

Most Beagles need plenty of healthy fats to maintain their energy and muscles.

Joint Conditions

Because of their unique, long backs and legs, sometimes Beagles can suffer from various back or joint problems.

One of them can be hip dysplasia. And it can be common for puppies if they aren’t fed correctly. Hip dysplasia happens when your canine’s joint and socket don’t grow at the same rate, causing them to stop fitting together.

This joint condition is genetic to a degree. But a steady, complete diet can be vital too.

Added nutrients like omega fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, and calcium can support puppies as they grow.

For example, glucosamine will cushion joints by growing cartilage tissue and stop them from rubbing. In fact, some studies suggest that glucosamine can prevent conditions like osteoarthritis too. [11]

Final Verdict

Beagles need a complete diet to support and protect their joints. They’re known to suffer from joint or back problems. They need a diet with high-quality meats, fruits, and veggies to thrive.

This is why we recommend Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice All Life Stages Dog Food.

This affordable but high-quality diet is loaded with protein, healthy fats, and nutrients like glucosamine for supporting the joints. Plus, it has excellent energy sources that’ll keep your Beagle’s tail wagging all day long.

But we understand that every Beagle is different. And if the chicken doesn’t do it for your furry friend, you cannot go wrong with any of our ten recommendations above.
