American Bully

Guide to Buying Dog Food for American Bullies

An American Bully needs a diet with high amounts of protein, combined with healthy fats and fiber to support their unique build.

Here are some of the things you’ll need to consider before selecting a diet for your American Bully.

What To Look For

Like most things, there’s a fundamental difference between top and low-quality diets. And it’s essential you choose a diet that provides them with crucial nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that helps them prosper.

Digestible Carbohydrates

Firstly, carbohydrates are not necessary for a dog’s diet. However, when it comes to American Bullies, they can use carbohydrates as a steady energy source. Plus, carbs will help them regulate their digestive system too.

Some American Bullies can suffer from sensitive tummies. If this is the case, try switching them to a gluten-free or grain-free diet instead. Sometimes choosing a diet with fewer carbohydrates can also prevent gassiness.

The best ingredients for easily digestible carbohydrates include beans, legumes, oats, peas, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

Dietary Fibers

Fiber can be really effective in controlling digestion problems. And as we discussed before, American Bullies can suffer with them.

There isn’t a recommended amount of fiber that American Bullies need. However, the digestible carbohydrates we discussed above are also excellent sources of fiber.

Try to find your dog a diet with supplemented prebiotics and probiotics. This helps nourish healthy bacteria in their tummy and will go a long way in preventing tummy upset.

Healthy Fats

An American Bully doesn’t need tons of fat in their diet to maintain their size and build. But they do need a steady source of healthy fats.

Look for ingredients like coconut, eggs, flaxseed oil, and salmon oils. Sometimes even nuts will provide plenty of healthy fats for your canine.

Healthy fats in these ingredients will help your pup absorb and process other nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from their diet. For example, vitamin A, D, and K. These essential vitamins will support joints and muscles, give them a shiny coat and healthy skin, and lower blood pressure. [4]

High Protein

Every dog needs protein in their diet. But not as much as an American Bully. They need high amounts of protein to maintain their unique stocky build. And if they don’t consume enough, it can lead to serious health problems later on.

But there’s a real difference between the quantity of protein and quality. And this can play a crucial part in your American Bully’s overall well-being.

When shopping for your dog’s food, try to find a diet with a high protein percentage. Dog food with 25% protein is enough for American Bullies. [5]

Most dog food brands will have meat as the first ingredient too. And your canine’s diet should be the same. Look for ingredients like beef, chicken, fish, or lamb. These meats will provide several nutrients and amino acids that will help your dog.

Meat meals are perfectly fine for an American Bully. They’re slightly lower in quality and protein but will still have the same nutrients that real meats do.

Plant-based protein sources can also boost the maximum amount of vitamins and minerals your American Bully gets. It’s just that they shouldn’t be the only source of protein in their diet. Look for ingredients like chickpeas, pea proteins, and livers.

High-Quality Vitamins & Minerals

There are several vitamins and minerals you can look for to help your American Bully.

Calcium and vitamin D are just two of them. These two nutrients will help your canine prevent joint conditions like arthritis.

Because of their stocky size and build and their weight, they tend to put added stress on their front legs. And without supplements like calcium and vitamin D, their joints can become tender, causing muscle degradation and suffering other joint problems later on.

If you’re worried about your American Bully’s joints, or mobility, it’s best to consult your veterinarian. They can recommend calcium supplements to help them.

Ingredients to Avoid

Human food is heavily regulated. But sadly, the same cannot be said for our furry friends.

Some commercial dog food brands will include specific ingredients to help maintain shelf life and keep it affordable for consumers. And these ingredients can often be low-quality and harmful to your pup. In fact, they can cause digestion problems, allergies, sensitivities, heart disease, or, worse yet, death.

Watch out for ingredients like BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), or Ethoxyquin. These are all known as artificial preservatives.

Also, avoid fillers or additives like Propylene Glycol, food dyes, Melamine, and MSG.

Ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy should also be avoided when it’s possible. They don’t have to be removed entirely from your American Bully’s diet. However, these ingredients are commonly linked with causing allergic reactions for some dogs.

American Bully Common Health Problems

Large dog breeds tend to suffer from several health issues because of their size. And the same is said for American Bullies.

Luckily, these health problems can be managed and controlled through a proper diet and regular exercise. Here are some of the common health problems your American Bully may be prone to.

Diabetes

You’ve probably heard of diabetes at some point in your life. Dogs can suffer from it too. This chronic disease occurs when the body suffers an insulin deficiency, causing it to become intolerant to glucose.

Diabetes mellitus comes in two types, type I and type II.

Type I diabetes is a genetic condition and will be controlled through medication. [6

Type II diabetes is caused by diet and can be managed or even reversed with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight loss.

If your American Bully suffers from diabetes, it can really affect their weight. Not only this, diabetes can cause other health complications like heart issues, kidney and liver damage, and even death. So they must have a healthy, balanced diet.

Most of the time, veterinarians will prescribe medication and recommend a diet that’ll control it. Usually, you will want to find a low-carb diet that has moderate amounts of protein and fat.

Nutrients like glucosamine, magnesium, and omega fatty acids can also benefit diabetic pups.

Food Allergies or Intolerances

Most of the time, American Bullies won’t suffer from food or environmental allergies. But there are still occasions when they can develop food allergies or intolerances. [7]

Most common allergens are proteins. For example, chicken, soy, or pork. Look out for dry, irritated skin, watery eyes after eating, vomiting, diarrhea, or coughing. These symptoms can be early signs of a food allergy. However, always consult a veterinarian for confirmation.

Not all hope is lost, though, as it is possible to avoid allergies and intolerances. Limited ingredient diets are made explicitly for them and remove any common allergens from your American Bully’s diet.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is a common digestion issue faced by American Bullies. It is an intestinal infection that causes inflammation and irritation in the tummy. [8]

There isn’t one single cause for it; however, it is believed that some causes of gastroenteritis include food allergies, cancer, or viruses. And because your American Bully is an opportunistic feeder, they’ll eat anything in sight. So it’s a consistent issue for them.

You must look out for vomiting or diarrhea that’s exceeded 24 hours, lethargy, or bloat. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to consult a vet immediately. These are common symptoms of gastroenteritis but can lead to severe issues like ileus or dehydration.

Some limited ingredient diets can effectively manage acute illnesses like gastroenteritis. These specialized diets will usually remove ingredients like corn, wheat, or soy because they’re a frequent cause of inflammation.

Obesity

Obesity is a rising issue for dogs, especially in the United States. And like their Pitbull cousins, they can suffer from obesity if they aren’t fed an appropriate, balanced diet.

On average, an adult American Bully should weigh approximately 130 pounds. So anything above this would be considered overweight.

This highly preventable disease can also lead to other serious health problems, including hip dysplasia, heart issues, diabetes, and much more.

To help prevent this, your American Bully will need a complete diet with high protein content and moderate healthy fats. You should also try to follow the feeding recommendations on your canine’s food.

Final Verdict

American Bullies are often mistaken for a Pitbull because of their stocky, muscular build, deep chests, and strong jaws.

These large pups need regular exercise and a high-calorie diet with plenty of energy from high-quality proteins and healthy fats.

And so, this is why we recommend Taste of the Wild Southwest Canyon Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

It contains several high-quality novel proteins like beef and lamb. It offers your American Bully vast amounts of healthy fats too. But if that wasn’t enough, it has whole fruits and veggies for powerful antioxidants that’ll improve your canine’s immune system.

But every canine is different. And if beef doesn’t do it for your American Bully, then you always try one of our 11 recommendations above. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
