Vital Essentials Dog Food Recall

Carnivore Meat Company on April 16, 2018, advised customers that the company is voluntarily recalling 4 two Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Dog Foods because they are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

This recall has been completed, and FDA has terminated this recall.

NOTE: The affected products were sold and distributed in the US via online retailers Chewy.com and Amazon.com, in addition to independent pet specialty retail stores.

Why Is It Being Recalled?

A single packaged product manufactured on the same day was tested by FDA and produce a positive test result for Salmonella.

What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a highly infectious bacteria commonly found in most reported cases of food-related illnesses in the United States and globally. Both humans and animals can carry salmonella in their intestines in addition to feces. Salmonella often spreads in contaminated foods.

Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in humans include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Upset Stomach
  • Vomiting

In severe cases, Salmonella can cause arterial infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and endocarditis. Anyone displaying such symptoms should contact their healthcare providers immediately.

Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in dogs include:

  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite

If your pet has consumed the above-recalled product and has any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

What Do I Do Now?

Vital Essentials has urged to check the packaging to see if a consumer has a product affected.

If a customer is affected, they can safely dispose of the recalled product and then contact the original place of purchase for a refund or replacement.

No other products produced by Vital Essentials have been affected by this voluntary recall.
