Northwest Naturals advised its customers on April 16, 2018, that they are recalling its frozen Chicken and Salmon chubs (5 pounds) because they may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.
This recall has been completed, and FDA has terminated this recall.
What’s Being Recalled?
The affected product is a 5 pound frozen chub labeled “Chicken & Salmon Recipe” with a UPC code of 0 87316 38440 6. The best buy date for the product facing the recall states “15 082218”.
There have been no reported cases of illness among pets or humans which are linked to the recall.
What Are Listeria Monocytogenes?
Listeria Monocytogenes are pathogenic bacteria that cause severe diseases. They are typically found in moist environments such as soil, water, and decaying animals or vegetation. Humans that are particularly vulnerable face becoming severely sick by this bacteria including:
- Pregnant women
- Humans with weakened immune systems
Listeria Monocytogenes cause a variety of symptoms and vary depending on the individual affected. However, common symptoms include diarrhea and fever.
Symptoms during pregnancy and newborns
During pregnancy, this bacteria is likely to only cause mild symptoms. However, the consequences for an infected baby can be deadly. Symptoms to be aware of include:
- Respiratory difficulties
- Feeding difficulties
Pets can become infected by Listeria Monocytogenes by consuming the product affected.
If you are concerned you have become ill due to this bacteria, consult your doctor immediately. To avoid spreading the pathogenic bacteria, wash your hands regularly.
Where Has The Affected Product Been Distributed?
The recalled product has so far been identified to be in one specifically isolated batch of 94 cases. However, these cases have been distributed in the following states and sold through pet retail stores:
- Rhode Island
Why Is It Being Recalled?
The product was sold over 1 year ago to distributors following a successful lab testing on 22/12/2016.
Please see below the timeline of events:
- The company and the Michigan Department of Agriculture are informed by the FDA on 21/02/2018.
- One chub is purchased and tested in a specialist pet store in Michigan.
- The above mentioned chub tests negative for Salmonella and E. coli, but tested positive for Listeria Monocytogenes.
- The company tests all batches of the affected product for all known pathogens before shipping.
- The company tests over 600 batches of product per week.
- The company does dual lab testing several times a month, comparing to USDA-FSIS lab samples.
What Do I Do Now?
The company has informed consumers to check for the lot code stated above on any of the 5 pound Chicken and Salmon chubs.
Any product with the lot code should be immediately returned to the origin of purchase for a full refund.
