J.M Smucker Recalls Multiple Dog Food Brands

J.M Smucker Company advised its customers on Feb. 15, 2018, that they are voluntarily recalling certain lines of its wet dog foods because there is the potential they contain low levels of a euthanasia drug, pentobarbital.

After consultation with J.M Smucker Company, the FDA has informed them that this is now considered a recall due to its actions to remove certain products from the marketplace.

Pentobarbital was confirmed to be present in the tallow ingredient used in the affected products. The FDA confirmed this.

The FDA is pursuing its investigation and has collected samples for testing. The investigation is still ongoing.

What is pentobarbital?

Pentobarbital is a euthanasia sedative that slows the activity in the brain and central nervous system.

Common symptoms found when pets ingested pentobarbital demonstrate dizziness, drowsiness, loss of balance, nausea, excitement, nystagmus (when the eyes move back and forth in a jerky manner), and an ability to stand up.

If consumption of this drug is high, it can lead to a coma or death.

Note: The levels of pentobarbital contained in the recalled products are considered low, unlikely to pose a significant health risk to pets.
