The product was primarily sold in Florida and Georgia. But, the company also targeted limited locations in Arizona and South Carolina.
Most of the recalled goods were located at retailer distribution centers, limiting the number of products available in the market.
No other Freshpet products have been affected by this recall.
Freshpet has advised that “Freshpet has received no reports of illness, injury, or adverse reaction to date, and has issued this recall because of our deep commitment to the safety of our pet parents and their dogs.”
Why Is There Concern?
A single lot of dog food was discovered to be contaminated with Salmonella. However, the workers at FreshPet designated this for destruction.
Unfortunately, the contaminated goods were unexpectedly shipped to retailers in specific locations between June 7 and June 10, 2021.
What Is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a highly infectious bacteria commonly found in most reported food-related illnesses in the United States and globally. Both humans and animals can carry salmonella in their intestines in addition to feces. Salmonella often spreads in contaminated foods.
Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in humans include:
- Abdominal cramping
- Upset Stomach
Salmonella can cause arterial infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and endocarditis in severe cases. Anyone displaying such symptoms should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in dogs include:
- Bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Decreased appetite
If your pet has consumed the above-recalled product and has any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
What Do I Do Now?
Consumers who have the recalled goods are urged to stop feeding it to their pets and dispose of them accordingly.
FreshPet has asked customers to contact the company directly if they discover they have any of the recalled products.
