What Is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a highly infectious bacteria commonly found in most reported food-related illnesses in the United States and globally. Both humans and animals can carry salmonella in their intestines in addition to feces. Salmonella often spreads in contaminated foods.
Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in humans include:
- Abdominal cramping
- Upset Stomach
Salmonella can cause arterial infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and endocarditis in severe cases. Anyone displaying such symptoms should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in dogs include:
- Bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Decreased appetite
If your pet has consumed the above-recalled product and has any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Why Is There Concern?
Dog foods contaminated with Salmonella pathogens are a significant risk to public health because they can affect animals and humans.
Pets can get severely sick from Salmonella and spread the bacteria unknowingly to humans without showing any symptoms.
If Salmonella becomes established in a dog’s GI (gastrointestinal) tract, dogs can spread the bacteria through its feces and continue the spread.
Due to the bacteria being spread via feces, it’s important to clean up thoroughly and wipe any exposed areas. Cleaning household items and good hygiene practices is also a way of stopping the spread of bacteria.
Federal laws require all pet foods to be free from any detrimental bacterias or pathogens such as Salmonella.
