One of the biggest challenges cat owners face is finding food that isn’t loaded with unnecessary carbohydrates.

Many pet brands use carbohydrates to give dry formulas their unique texture. Starchy carbohydrates like potatoes are commonly used to help keep pets full and energized.

But the main problem is…. cats don’t need carbs!

Nulo is a popular brand known for its low-carbohydrate recipes. Its product ranges contain high-quality animal proteins and whole produce, all at an affordable price.

The company has enjoyed steady growth over the years, even being recognized by Forbes as a “Top 25 Most Innovative Retail Brand”.

But is Nulo all it’s cracked up to be?

About Nulo Cat Food

The Nulo pet food brand is owned by Apax Partners LLP, a multi-billion dollar private equity firm in Britain.

Nulo’s slogan is “nutrition meets love in every bite.” It’s a popular brand for pet parents worldwide because of its affordability, quality, and low-glycemic recipes suitable for pet diabetes and weight problems.

Nulo originally started as a dog-sitting business and was founded in 2009 by Michael Landa.

Michael was worried about the growing diabetic and overweight pets requiring at-home insulin injections. So, Michael and his dog, Max, traveled across the USA to find out more.

During his research, he learned how companies included large quantities of high-glycemic ingredients in pet products. Michael found some pet foods contained over 40% carbohydrate fillers, while others had unhealthy amounts of plant-based proteins.

High amounts of carbohydrates can cause obesity, diabetes, joint problems, and other pet weight-related health issues.

As a result, Michael launched his own pet food brand with a team of veterinarians, animal nutritionists, and food formulators. And eventually, Nulo became a well-established brand in the pet food industry.

Nulo mainly positions itself as a fitness-conscious pet brand. Many of its formulas are specifically designed to provide healthy amounts of energy and beneficial nutrients to animals.

The company has several ambassadors, including professional Crossfit athletes, fitness trainers, and Olympic medalists. [1]

And the brand collaborates with several organizations and charities to improve the fitness and mental health of pets and their owners.

In the past, Nulo has worked with PetSmart to organize a “Squat Your Dog Challenge”. It has also collaborated with MindBodyGreen to guide pets and owners through their personal wellness journey.

The company partners with Ironman events, an established triathlon organization that hosts multisport racing, including swimming, cycling, and running. These events are held worldwide, including in Europe and the USA.

Working with such well-established organizations has brought steady growth to the brand. And Nulo is now considered California’s largest pet food company.

Where Is Nulo Cat Food Made?

Most Nulo products are manufactured in the United States except for the brand’s wet cat food products, which are made in its facilities in Thailand. Nulo has several factories in the United States, including Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

The company can be pretty vague about the origin of its ingredients. But from information publicly available, Nulo typically uses ingredients sourced worldwide.

Most poultry, meats, and fish are sourced from respected countries like France, North America, and New Zealand.

These high-quality meats are joined by whole produce and vitamin packs, primarily sourced from the USA. But, on occasions, the company may include ingredients sourced from abroad.

On its website, Nulo claims each ingredient has been tested and traced to establish its quality and safety.

And every facility is inspected annually by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) for compliance and safety.

Ingredient Quality

Ingredients

Nulo’s formulas usually contain much better quality ingredients than other brands. Their products contain quality animal proteins and whole produce for beneficial nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Most Nulo recipes contain multiple animal protein sources for rich amounts of protein. Dry formulas typically have 3-4 animal sources. In fact, over 80% of protein content in its products comes from real animal sources.

You can choose formulas containing high-quality meats such as beef, chicken, turkey, and duck. Other recipes include sustainably sourced fish like cod, salmon, yellowfin tuna, and crab.

Animal meat provides healthy concentrations of protein, amino acids, and essential fatty acids that cats need.

Plus, protein plays a crucial role in your cat’s energy too.

Nulo offers suitable diets for most adult cats. But, they also provide diets for kittens and seniors. And, they make appropriate formulas for cats with specific food allergies, sensitivities, and other common health problems.

Patented Ganeden BC30 probiotics are typically included to boost nutrient absorption and improve protein digestion, leading to healthy muscle growth. These beneficial bacteria are a powerful strain of Bacillus Coagulans – scientifically proven to regulate and enhance immune systems. [2,3]

What makes Nulo unique is the low glycemic ingredients typically used in its products.

Instead of using familiar carbohydrate sources for energy, Nulo uses chickpeas, lentils, and sweet potatoes. Low glycemic foods prevent spikes in blood sugar levels, which is crucial for diabetic cats.

Nulo’s canned wet foods are 100% complete and balanced for cats of all life stages. They’re made without corn, wheat, soy, or artificial ingredients. Nulo uses rosemary extract as a natural preservative.

And while fruits and vegetables aren’t as important as real meats, they still play a role in your cat’s diet.

Each recipe is crafted with whole produce for high-quality antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Antioxidants protect against free radical tissue damage, a by-product of protein digestion. And antioxidants help boost immune health, improving nutrient absorption.

So you’ll likely see ingredients like blueberries, carrots, cranberries, kelp, spinach, or sweet potatoes often featured in the ingredients list.

Finally, some formulas are made without GMO ingredients. However, Nulo products never contain meat or poultry by-product meals. All the company’s recipes are formulated to meet the nutritional requirements established by specific AAFCO nutrient profiles for cats.

What variety of cat foods does Nulo offer?

Nulo manufactures both wet and dry formulas for cats. They offer two ranges for cats; Nulo Freestyle and Nulo MedalSeries.

Nulo Freestyle

Nulo Freestyle is the company’s staple product range, available in dry and wet formulas.

The range’s dry formulas come in several varieties. There are standard high meat recipes to choose from, as well as indoor cat diets. You can also pick a cat food made for specific health problems.

There are also freeze-dried raw formulas that feature up to 98% animal proteins. The range’s wet foods also meet the dietary needs of all life stages.

Nulo Freestyle offer formulas for specific cat needs, including:

  • Hairball Management contains additional dietary fibers which gently move hair through a cat’s digestive tract and reduce hairballs.
  • Weight Control diets with low fat and carbohydrates aid weight loss. These formulas contain natural L-carnitine sources that stimulate the metabolism too.
  • Grain-free and limited ingredient diets are specifically formulated for cats with specific food allergies and sensitivities.
  • Indoor cat foods provide added protein, fiber, and amino acid sources. These recipes tend to be much lower in fat and calories to prevent weight gain and specific health problems.

These products come in several flavors: beef, chicken, cod, duck, salmon, and turkey. Most of the product line’s dry options contain 3-4 animal proteins. And these high-quality meats are joined by whole produce for beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Dry cat foods in this range can contain 38% to 46% crude protein. For example, Nulo’s popular Freestyle Chicken & Cod recipe contains 40% crude protein.

The diet with the highest protein is Nulo FreeStyle Chicken Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Food with 46%. This percentage is more than enough and meets the AAFCO nutritional requirements for cats.

Limited ingredient diets contain carefully selected ingredients that help prevent adverse reactions in cats. They use a single protein source and avoid common allergens like chicken, dairy, and beef.

Most traditional limited ingredient diets contain lower protein concentrations. For example, Natural Balance’s limited ingredient diets formulas contain 31% crude protein. But Nulo’s recipes have 35% crude protein.

All options contain Ganeden BC30 probiotics for healthy digestion and help boost immune health. Many cat parents frequently recommend the Freestyle range for improving their cat’s overall well-being and energy levels.

Nulo Freestyle formulas are entirely free of low-quality fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy. And grain-free diets contain supplemented taurine to protect heart health and manage DCM risks.

Below shows the Freestyle range compared to Nulo averages.

Nulo MedalSeries

Nulo MedalSeries Featured Image

Nulo MedalSeries is an exclusive product range to PetSmart. It has similar characteristics to the Freestyle range and features dry and canned cat food options.

Like Freestyle, MedalSeries have dry options for the everyday needs of cats. On average, 80-90% of protein content comes from animal sources in these products.

Everyday diets contain rich amounts of fatty acids that improve skin, coat, and joint health. These healthy fats come from similar animal proteins to the Freestyle range, including salmon, Alaska pollock, tuna, and scallop.

Omega fatty acids are crucial for your cat’s heart health and help nourish natural skin oil production in their body. A lack of these fatty acids can cause severe health problems. Often it can lead to rashes, loss of fur, and even heart issues.

These formulas also contain natural fiber and probiotic sources for healthy digestion. For example, some recipes use miscanthus grass to help keep cats full for longer. And Ganeden BC30 is included to improve immune function and maintain the digestive system.

Powerful antioxidants such as vitamin C and E protect against free radicals and improve mineral absorption. Some also claim they support cellular health in pets. Either way, they’re a welcomed addition to your cat’s diet.

Wet formulas are available in minced and pate forms. But they’re also available in pouches of flaked and shredded meat.

These wet varieties exclude troublesome ingredients like corn, wheat, soy, and artificial ingredients. But crucially, they are entirely free of carrageenan too.

The FDA claims carrageenan is safe to be used in commercial pet foods. But, some studies suggest that carrageenan consumption can cause digestive inflammation and even cancer in pets. Instead, Nulo uses safer thickening agents like guar gum or xanthan gum.

Crude protein content in this range’s dry foods is around 36.5% to 41%. This percentage is enough for adult cats and meets AAFCO nutritional requirements.

The Best Nulo Recipes: Reviewed

At Honest Whiskers, we always try to use data and the latest scientific information and research in our reviews.

To select the best Nulo cat foods, we’ve done the following:

  • Compiled a list of 40 Nulo cat products – we have listed every currently available product manufactured by the brand.
  • Gather raw data on each product and compare it to our database – we’ve put together as much information on each product as possible. We’ve gathered data such as the country it’s manufactured in, its ingredients and quality, macronutrient breakdown, cost breakdown, and calories. We’ve then compared this data against other products in our extensive database.
  • Rated each product individually and compared against others – applying our strict rating criteria and scoring each product. Not all aspects carry the same gravity. For example, the ingredient quality has more weight than specific macronutrient percentages.

Here are Nulo’s top three most popular dry and wet formulas.

1. Nulo Freestyle Chicken & Cod Recipe Dry Cat & Kitten Food

Nulo Freestyle Chicken & Cod Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat & Kitten Food
8.5/10Honest Whiskers Score
  • Grain-free diet suitable for kittens and adults
  • First four ingredients are real animal proteins
  • Balanced ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
  • Made in the USA
  • Has an impressive 40% crude protein
  • Taurine included for heart health
  • 80% of the protein comes from real meats
  • Made without potatoes, tapioca, grains, and gluten
  • Features quite a few legumes in the ingredients list
  • Some fussy eaters refuse to eat it

Kittens need high amounts of protein to support muscle growth and proper nutrition that helps their fast growth. This grain-free formula offers growing kittens the perfect balance of protein, fatty acids, and high-quality nutrients in a low-glycemic recipe.

The first ingredient is deboned chicken, closely followed by chicken meal and turkey meal. These protein-dense meats largely contribute to the recipe’s impressive 40% crude protein and help grow healthy muscles. 83% of this formula’s protein comes from animal proteins.

Deboned cod provides rich concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids – essential for healthy skin and coat. These healthy fats also support joint growth and maintain heart health.

Added chicken fat is the formula’s primary source of glucosamine and chondroitin. These amino sugars are naturally found in animal tissue and promote healthy joints and bones.

Glucosamine helps grow cartilage tissue around joints. Chondroitin sulfate is scientifically proven to aid bone formation in kittens and adult cats. [4]

Dietary fibers come from the inclusion of ground flaxseed, dried chicory root, and pea fiber that aid digestion and help grow healthy bacteria in your kitten’s tummy. And whole produce such as dried kelp, cranberries, and sweet potatoes contain antioxidants that boost immune health.

Natural flavor is included for a concentrated source of meaty taste that entices even the fussiest of eaters. This additive is commonly made from hydrolyzed animal tissue for added nutrients.

The recipe’s 486 calories per cup are more than enough to keep up with your cat’s energy needs without piling on extra weight. And it’s made entirely free of artificial ingredients, corn, wheat, soy, and grains.

Overall, we estimate it’ll cost owners around $0.52 to $0.96 a day to feed their cats. This equates to about $189.80 to $350.40 a year, depending on the size you purchase.

2. Nulo Freestyle Salmon & Lentils Adult Trim Dry Cat Food

Nulo Freestyle Salmon & Lentils Recipe Grain-Free Adult Trim Dry Cat Food
8.9/10Honest Whiskers Score
  • Suitable for kittens and adult cats
  • Four of the first five ingredients are animal proteins
  • Has a probiotic strain that supports digestion
  • Healthy doses of vitamin C & E
  • Loaded with antioxidants that protect against free radicals
  • Doesn't contain grains, gluten, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial ingredients
  • Healthy balance of omega fatty acids
  • Taurine included for heart health
  • Has lots of legumes, not ideal for cats with food allergies or sensitivities
  • Isn't a huge hit with fussy eaters
  • Some owners comment on how small the kibble is

This formula is a popular choice for many cat owners looking for a nutritional weight control diet. It contains precise protein concentrations for healthy muscles and fiber for digestion.

Deboned salmon is the first ingredient, followed by protein-dense meats like turkey, chicken, and deboned cod.

Salmon is an ideal ingredient for its high concentrations of protein. It’s also a highly palatable ingredient that provides healthy doses of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats play a crucial role in giving your cat healthy skin and a lovely shiny coat. Plus, they protect the heart, aid joint mobility, and manage inflammation in the body.

Chicken meal acts as a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin for healthy muscle, joints, and bones – keeping your cat energized and mobile. Chicken is also an excellent source of L-carnitine that boosts metabolism and helps your cat burn off excess body fat.

Like other Nulo products, this grain-free formula uses chicken fat to contribute to the 12% fat content. Chicken fat boosts moisture and provides beneficial nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

The formula contains chelated minerals such as calcium carbonate and iron proteinate. Chelated vitamins and minerals are much easier to digest and ensure the recipe meets the nutrient requirements set out by the AAFCO.

Supplemented taurine is included to help protect against specific heart diseases like DCM. Taurine also plays a role in improving hydration and aids digestion, vision, and immune health.

Most grain-free recipes will include high-glycemic foods like potatoes or tapioca as a thickening agent and natural carbohydrate sources. These ingredients aren’t ideal for cats with diabetes or existing weight problems.

Instead, Nulo uses low glycemic foods like sweet potato, whole peas, and lentils. But these may be unsuitable for cats with food allergies or sensitivities.

And despite using these ingredients, the recipe still contains a high 31% carbohydrates.

Each serving contains 421 calories and contains no grain, gluten, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial ingredients. We estimate this formula costs about $0.60 to $1.12 a day or $219 to $408.80 a year.

3. Nulo Freestyle Turkey & Chicken Grain-Free Canned Cat & Kitten Food

Nulo Freestyle Turkey & Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Canned Cat & Kitten Food
9.1/10Honest Whiskers Score
  • All of the first five ingredients are animal proteins
  • Packed with omegas, taurine, protein, vitamins, and minerals
  • Complete and balanced for kittens and adults
  • Made in the USA
  • 100% free of grains, gluten, corn, wheat, soy, peas, GMOs, and artificial ingredients
  • Features a blend of prebiotics and probiotics
  • Made with powerful superfoods like pumpkin and cranberries
  • Much lower carbohydrates compared to other brands
  • Much more expensive compared to other Nulo products
  • Some owners are skeptical due to the recipe using agar agar.

This grain-free canned formula is one of Nulo’s most popular recipes. It is made with multiple animal proteins. Many owners appreciate how the recipe is free of gluten, peas, and GMOs.

Whole turkey and chicken are the first two ingredients to feature on the list. These protein-dense meats are closely followed by turkey liver to help replicate your cat’s natural diet.

Menhaden fish oil largely contributes to the formula’s 6.5% crude fat content. It acts as a natural source of essential fatty acids like omega-3s and omega-6s.

The formula uses natural flavor to increase palatability by enhancing the aroma and taste. Nulo also uses guar gum as a thickening agent, contributing small amounts of dietary fiber. Although, this substance has been known for triggering adverse reactions in some pets.

Powerful superfoods like pumpkin and cranberries help the digestive system by nourishing healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. These natural sources of prebiotics and probiotics also improve nutrient absorption.

Canned foods typically contain lower levels of carbohydrates than traditional kibbles. We estimate this recipe has 3.75% carbohydrates.

This canned formula is complete and balanced for all life stages. It is entirely free of gluten, grains, corn, wheat, and soy. Plus, Nulo crafted the recipe without meat by-products, artificial ingredients, and carrageenan.

Some negative reviews are skeptical because the recipe includes agar agar. Agar agar is low in calories and fat and helps control weight gain. It’s similar to carrageenan, but it’s extracted from Gelidium and Cracilaria and isn’t considered cancerous.

This canned formula carries a much higher price tag than other Nulo diets. We estimate it’ll cost between $2.08 to $2.94 a day or $759.20 to £1,073.10 a year to give to your furry friend.

Nulo Cat Food Reviews

Overall, the reviews of Nulo cat food are generally positive. Owners love the quality of ingredients and affordability of the brand’s products.

A small number of negative reviews mention how their cats refused to eat it. While others mention a change in ingredients for some Nulo products.

Here are some genuine reviews from owners who recently purchased Nulo cat food.

Positive Reviews

My kittens like this one! Since it’s a big can it gets a little “stiff” (like sticks to the spork when putting in bowl) but after some warming up and extra water we are good to go! Great poultry mix option

Jasmin, reviewing Nulo Freestyle Turkey & Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Canned Cat & Kitten Food

My Dusty is diabetic and I found this high protein low-carb food with great Ingredients, and the whole gang loves it.

Layla, reviewing Nulo Freestyle Salmon & Lentils Recipe Grain-Free Adult Trim Dry Cat Food

Negative Reviews

My cats really like this food, but I don’t know what’s been going on lately with quality control. The consistency of the food has been terrible. Instead of a nice, thick pate, it’s more like a Meat Slurpee or Meat Pudding as it sticks to the inside of the cat and spoon like canned pumpkin does. Way too much moisture. It also has an unusual odor. I use two cases per week, and I’ve seen a lot of cans of this particular flavor, but the last 6 have been like this; it isn’t normal. I would give this 5 stars if Nulo could get it right every time instead of just for a while. Speculation but I’ve started to worry that they won’t do a recall unless the food is life-threatening as they tout “never had a recall” in their advertising. Consistency over time should be as important as providing safe ingredients.

FosterMommy, reviewing Nulo Freestyle Turkey & Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Canned Cat & Kitten Food

This looked, on paper, like such a great food that when Chewy didn’t have Solid Gold Indigo Moon, which I normally feed my 7 cats, I ordered the Nulo. Instead of loving it, they all just picked at it. Sorry.

Ociopia, reviewing Nulo Freestyle Chicken & Cod Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat & Kitten Food

How Much Does Nulo Cat Food Cost?

Nulo seems an excellent budget-friendly option that provides cats with the necessary nutrients.

For the average weight of an adult cat (10 lbs), Nulo’s wet food costs on average $7.34 per day. Whereas, Nulo’s dry formulas cost about $0.68 per day.

We made these calculations based on the calorie content, weight, and product size. We also took into account the daily calorie needs of a 10 lb adult cat.

Our Verdict

This Nulo cat food review shows that quality cat food doesn’t always have a high price tag. Nulo’s products offer real value for money, so your feline gets excellent ingredients and complete nutrition.

We love that they always have animal protein sources as the first ingredient. Most of its products feature healthy doses of fatty acids, essential amino acids, and protein.

Nulo has an impressive range of products; its Freestyle product range is ideal for most adult cats. And its limited ingredient diets are specifically made for cats with specific health problems and food allergies.

So is Nulo a good cat food brand? Yes. But it’s always best to discuss with your veterinarian before making any changes to your feline’s diet.
