About Natural Balance

Natural Balance was founded in 1989 by Dick Van Patten. Today, this brand is a well-established, popular pet company that manufactures scientifically-backed formulas that meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for cats and dogs.

Some brands offer higher protein concentrations. But, the company aims to minimize low-quality ingredients in its recipes, such as artificial ingredients. Natural Balance’s limited ingredient diets are extremely popular for parents with sensitive cats.

Most Natural Balance cat foods are made without common allergens like corn, wheat, or soy. While others are gluten-free too. Natural Balance’s limited ingredient diets are simple recipes that eliminate troublesome foods responsible for adverse reactions in cats.

Most Natural Balance products feature high-quality animal protein for controlled amounts of amino acids, omega fatty acids, and protein.

Natural Balance proudly provides food for famous institutions such as San Diego Zoo. It also supplies the Arson Investigation and Explosive Detection dogs in the ATF with food.

And because of the company’s commitment to work with these renowned institutions, it encourages pet parents to trust Natural Balance. Many believe the brand produces safe and complete feline diets.

In 2013, Natural Balance merged with Del Monte Pet Foods and eventually rebranded as Big Heart Pet Brands. By 2015, the brand was purchased by J.M. Smucker and joined a growing family of pet food brands like Nature’s Recipe. [1]

Unfortunately, J.M. Smucker has been subject to several controversies, legal problems, and recalls in recent years. Notably, J.M. Smucker suffered a recall due to Melamine contamination, which sparked public distrust due to a botulism outbreak.

However, in 2021, Natural Balance was again purchased in 2021 by Nexus Capital Management LP. It is believed this will put the brand in a prime position to invest in its core product ranges and invest in scientific research, development, and innovation. [2]

Natural Balance Controversies

Despite the company’s meticulous safety testing and procedures, Natural Balance has been subject to legal controversies and public scrutiny. Several Natural Balance products have suffered recalls in recent years because of potentially dangerous contamination.

The most severe recall occurred in 2007 and involved a dangerous botulism outbreak. Some Natural Balance wet foods were suspected of being contaminated with botulinum, a highly toxic substance for humans and other animals.

In 2019, Natural Balance was named in a list of 16 pet brands potentially linked to increased heart disease risk by the FDA. No recall has been issued due to this investigation, and it is still ongoing. However, the increased risk is associated with specific grain-free diets directly causing heart disease, DCM, in cats and dogs. [3]

More recently, Natural Balance announced a new vegetarian dog food. This has sparked heated debate in the pet community as dogs are naturally omnivores and need animal protein to thrive. Like cats, plant proteins don’t provide dogs with the necessary amino acids and protein.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Ingredients

Natural Balance manufactures most of its products in the USA. The company has multiple manufacturing plants, including one in Topeka, Kansas.

However, not every ingredient included in its formulas is from the United States. Sometimes, the company will source ingredients from Canada, France, India, and New Zealand.

Natural Balance does disclose specific information on its protein sources. Still, it’s much more vague for the origins of other ingredients. The brand offers its consumers a “Feed with Confidence” promise on all its products. [4]

All of the company’s labs are ISO 17025 accredited, meaning they are subject to third-party testing and have to maintain the finest quality and safety practices. Plus, on the company’s website, you can enter the UPC and lot number of your product, and you’ll be able to view its third-party test results.

Ingredient Quality

Natural Balance products have low to moderate protein content. Despite the brand’s protein levels adhering to AAFCO standards, other pet brands offer more comprehensive protein concentrations.

On average, our research found that Natural Balance products offer approximately 32% protein. In comparison, Acana had 35% protein, while Taste of the Wild formulas offered 34.6%.

Adequate protein is crucial for cats because it helps with muscle development and hair growth. Plus, protein provides them with essential amino acids they cannot synthesize, like taurine. Taurine plays a crucial role in preventing heart disease, such as Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in cats.

How Taurine Helps Cats Infographic
How Taurine Helps Cats

That being said, every Natural Balance formula includes high-quality, wholesome animal meats for protein. And animal proteins are always the first ingredient.

Most of the brand’s product ranges have an ideal fat content, suitable for overweight cats. On average, we found Natural Balance recipes have approximately 12.98% fat content. Low-fat concentrations help reduce caloric content and limit excess energy that converts into body fat.

Carbohydrates aren’t essential for a cat’s diet. But most commercial dry foods have them because these ingredients act as natural fiber sources. Natural Balance typically includes high-quality, nutritious whole grains for added nutrients.

Finally, Natural Balance always aims to use natural ingredients. Each of its products does not contain low-quality fillers. But, some recipes do not include beneficial ingredients such as probiotics or glucosamine.

Natural Balance Product Ranges

Natural Balance offers a variety of wet and dry products for cats. Always discuss any changes to your cat’s diet with your veterinarian.

Natural Balance Original Ultra

Natural Balance Original Ultra Featured Image

Natural Balance Original Ultra is one of the company’s staple product ranges. These premium cat foods are specifically formulated to support your cat’s overall health.

Cat owners can choose between dry and wet foods, depending on preference. These holistic diets provide beneficial nutrients that’ll maintain brain, eye, muscle, and heart health.

All these products feature high-quality animal proteins such as chicken or salmon. Natural fiber sources such as oats promote healthy digestion. And at the same time, high concentrations of DHA support brain function and improve skin and coat health.

Most of this product range is designed for adult cats. However, the company offers a suitable diet for senior cats which is complete and balanced. All Natural Balance Original Ultra is made free of artificial ingredients too.

Below shows the Original Ultra range compared to Natural Balance averages.

Natural Balance Fat Cats

As the name suggests, Natural Balance Fat Cats is specifically formulated to help overweight cats shed off those extra pounds.

This product range is made by a team of veterinarians, formulators, and animal nutritionists to ensure these products adhere to AAFCO standards.

The Natural Balance Fat Cats range has much higher fiber concentrations to help cats feel fuller for longer. Each recipe contains whole fruits and vegetables for high-quality antioxidants and probiotics. Probiotics promote healthy bacteria in your cat’s tummy and improve nutrient absorption.

Like every weight control diet, these formulas have much lower caloric content than other Natural Balance products. We found, on average, these diets contained 320 kcal/cup caloric content compared to an average of 393 kcal/cup in its alternative foods.

You can also find these simple, calming recipes containing natural herbs and tryptophan from ingredients like turkey. These substances are an excellent ingredient known to calm anxiousness.

All Natural Balance Fat Cats cat foods are entirely free of artificial ingredients and made in the USA.

Below shows the Fat Cats range compared to Natural Balance averages.

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets Featured Image

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets are one of the brand’s most popular product ranges.

This line of cat foods has a much more extensive selection. You can choose between wet and dry varieties. These formulas purposely limit the number of ingredients sensitive cats are exposed to. This is vital for managing food intolerances and allergies in cats.

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets are more simplified recipes and come in various flavors to suit the individual preferences of most adult cats. These products are formulated with a single animal protein to limit exposure to common allergens such as dairy or chicken.

Most recipes include healthy fat sources such as sunflower oil or fish oil to improve skin and coat health.

Food allergies and intolerances often cause skin conditions that can sometimes be painful. Omega fatty acids also help manage inflammation in the body due to their anti-inflammatory properties. These healthy fats also aid the weakened immune systems of sensitive cats.

Each recipe contains fortified vitamins and minerals to ensure it meets the daily nutritional requirements of cats. Plus, they’re made in the USA and contain no grains, gluten, artificial ingredients, corn, wheat, or soy.

Below shows the Limited Ingredients Diet range compared to Natural Balance averages. This includes both wet and dry formulas.

Natural Balance Delectable Delights

Natural Balance Delectable Delights Featured Image

Natural Balance Delectable Delights are highly palatable wet cat foods designed for picky eaters. Most fussy eaters hate the dry or bland nature of most commercial cat foods. These gourmet-style meals are packed with tasty flavor and appealing aromas to entice them.

These wet cat foods are hand-made stews containing high-quality animal proteins and wholesome produce. And they’re not highly processed, unlike some other wet foods.

Overall, we found this product range offered, on average, 10.3% crude protein or 59.17% protein based on a dry matter basis. These high protein concentrations will provide adequate amino acids, omega fatty acids, and essential nutrients most adult cats need.

Picky eaters are renowned for preferring the soft, unique texture of high moisture diets. You can use these formulas as a stand-alone meal or as a topper to encourage picky felines to eat other Natural Balance cat foods.

Below shows the Delectable Delights range compared to Natural Balance averages. This is based on a dry matter basis.

Natural Balance Platefulls

Natural Balance Platefulls Featured Image

Natural Balance Platefulls are the company’s exclusive range of gourmet, grain-free cat foods. They’re specifically formulated for felines wanting tasty flavor and craving the finest ingredients.

Like the Delectable Delights, most recipes use highly palatable ingredients. Each recipe is started with premium animal proteins such as mackerel, sardines, chicken, duck, or salmon.

However, based on our research, we found these products offer less protein concentrations compared to the company’s Delectable Delights range.

We found these products offer 8% crude protein or 44.44% protein content based on a dry matter basis. This is much less than Delectable Delights’ 10.3% and 59.17% retrospectively.

These formulas contain a balanced ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which improve skin and coat health. Plus, these healthy fats play a vital role in heart and joint health.

Each recipe is made in the USA and contains no grains, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial ingredients. They contain fortified vitamins and minerals to ensure it meets AAFCO standards. Finally, each diet is formulated with added taurine sources to prevent heart disease risks like DCM in cats.

Here are Natural Balance’s top three most popular dry and wet formulas.

1. Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Green Pea & Duck Dry Cat Food

1. Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Green Pea & Duck Dry Cat Food
8.4/10Honest Whiskers Score
  • Offers tailored nutrition for food allergies and sensitivities
  • Uses a single protein source
  • Packed with healthy fats, amino acids, and nutrients
  • Made without artificial ingredients, grains, corn, wheat, or soy
  • Fortified vitamins and minerals ensure the recipe is balanced and complete
  • High concentrations of omega fatty acids help manage inflammation and improve skin and coat health
  • Green peas are the first ingredient
  • Contains several legumes that act as alternative carbohydrate sources
  • It has slightly lower protein content compared to other brands

Natural Balance’s Limited Ingredient Diets are the brand’s most popular product ranges.

Unfortunately, the first ingredient in this list is green peas. Natural Balance includes these wholesome vegetables for antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Peas act as an alternative carbohydrate source in limited ingredient diets.

However, we did find this formula has much higher amounts of carbohydrates. We found it contained roughly 44% carbohydrates, much higher than other brands. And the FDA is currently investigating a potential link between grain-free formulas with potatoes or legumes causing Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs and cats.

To help combat these risks, Natural Balance includes supplemented taurine. This amino acid helps improve hydration and aids immune function in cats.

Duck and duck meal act as the only protein source to help prevent new food allergies from developing. These novel proteins are ideal ingredients because they aren’t common allergens. Real animal meats provide adequate protein and amino acid concentrations.

Canola oil and sunflower oil act as the recipe’s primary source of fat and provide soothing levels of omega fatty acids.

These healthy fats help combat symptoms of most food allergies and intolerances. Omega fatty acids aid skin, coat, and joint health and manage inflammation in the body.

Overall, we found this formula is a much more budget-friendly option for cat parents. We estimate it costs roughly $0.68 per day and $248.20 a year.

  • Has a higher price tag than other canned formulas

This limited ingredient diet is a suitable option for cats that suffer from chicken sensitivities and need a diet that excludes other troublesome foods.

Real, whole meat starts off the ingredients list. Duck acts as the recipe’s only source of protein and provides high concentrations of amino acids and omega fatty acids. Duck is also an excellent source of glucosamine which aids joints and promotes cartilage tissue in the body.

Most wet formulas typically use water as a way of increasing moisture content. Instead, this diet uses duck broth for its high 78% moisture content and provides added nutrients.

Overall, we found this recipe has much fewer carbohydrates compared to other Natural Balance cat foods.

We estimate this highly palatable recipe contains only 5.5% carbohydrates. A small quantity of carbohydrates ensures a stable energy source for your kitty.

Meanwhile, chelated minerals and vitamins ensure it is nutritionally balanced and complete for adult cats. For example, the recipe includes calcium carbonate for healthy bone growth. At the same time, added iron proteinate aids blood cell growth and improves immune health.

This limited ingredient diet is made in the USA. It is completely free of corn, wheat, soy, grains, and artificial ingredients.

However, this diet has a much higher price tag than other Natural Balance diets. Overall, we estimate it costs roughly $2.73 per day and $995.45 per year. But, most canned formulas are more expensive compared to commercial dry foods.

  • Can be slightly more expensive than other dry formulas

This dry cat food is specifically formulated for the everyday needs of all life stages. But unlike other formulas we’ve previously discussed, this diet is made with wholesome, nutritious grains for added nutrients and fiber.

Chicken meal kicks off the ingredients list and acts as the recipe’s primary source of protein.

In combination, added whole chicken, chicken liver, and salmon meal contributes soothing levels of glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health. Plus, these protein-dense meats provide l-carnitine, an essential nutrient for lean muscle development.

Brown rice acts as a natural source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Nutritious grains like these provide calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus – crucial nutrients for healthy teeth and bones.

That being said, the inclusion of whole grains also bolsters carbohydrate content.

We estimate the recipe contains 36.2% carbs on a dry matter basis. High carbohydrate content can often cause weight gain for cats and isn’t crucial for their overall health.

Fish oil and chicken fat provide beneficial omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These healthy substances aid joint mobility and give your cat a shiny coat. While high-quality antioxidants come from vegetables like cranberries for immune function and health.

Overall, we estimate this cat food costs roughly $0.52 per day, or $189.80 a year. It’s a much more affordable option if you’re seeking a high-quality diet containing vital nutrients, amino acids, and fiber from wholesome grains.

Natural Balance Recall History

Despite its glowing reviews and cat parent feedback, Natural Balance does have a history of pet food recalls. But, the company always strives to perfect its safety and quality practices.

  • March 2007: Following an investigation, the FDA and AVMA identified certain Natural Balance products with potential melamine contamination. The affected products were both dry and wet products. [5
  • July 2007: The FDA issued a recall on four varieties of Natural Balance canned foods after routine testing identified botulism. Dogs have immunity against these bacteria, but it’s hazardous for humans and other animals. [6]
  • June 2010: Natural Balanced issued a recall of several foods manufactured in Diamond Pet Food’s facility. The company suspected potential salmonella contamination of these products. [7]
  • May 2012: The FDA recalled several batches of Natural Balances products due to suspected salmonella contamination. [8]
  • July 2020: J.M. Smucker Company issued a voluntary recall of a single lot of its Ultra Chicken & Liver Pate canned food. The company had concerns over elevated choline chloride levels. [9

You can view an updated list of all pet food recalls since 2018 here.

Our Verdict

This Natural Balance cat food review shows that this company can often be a suitable choice for parents seeking a high-quality diet ideal for sensitive cats.

Its products include premium ingredients for beneficial nutrients, amino acids, and fatty acids. Every Natural Balance cat food meets the unique dietary needs of most adult cats and adheres to AAFCO daily nutrient requirements.

Natural Balance’s most popular product is its limited ingredient diets. In fact, these diets are some of the best on the market today. These carefully made formulas are crafted explicitly for food allergies and sensitivities.

But, this company has suffered multiple recalls, especially since its acquisition by J.M. Smuckers Company.

Fortunately, the company is now owned by  Nexus Capital Management LP. And this puts the brand in a prime position to invest in its core product ranges, scientific research, development, and innovation.

Discuss with your veterinarian today to see if Natural Balance is a worthy addition to your sensitive feline diet.
