About Merrick

Merrick Pet Care, Inc. is a family-owned business founded in 1988 by Garth Merrick. Merrick launched the company after he formulated home-cooked diets for his family pet. [1]

Over the years, the company has established itself as a trusted, premium pet food brand. It emphasizes on wholesome nutrition by using human-grade ingredients. Merrick also never includes ingredients sourced from China.

These commitments have allowed the company to steadily grow over numerous years. And this steady growth resulted in Merrick being purchased by Nestle-Purina.

The acquisition of the brand did meet some criticism from pet owners globally.

Many cat parents believed the ownership would negatively impact the quality of Merrick’s products. But the main changes involved a specific canning technique learned from Purina.

Merrick is a much smaller pet brand compared to others. Yet, the company offers an impressive variety of products for cats and dogs.

The brand’s Backcountry and Purrfect Bistro cat foods are its most popular product lines. Both of these ranges aim to replicate your cat’s natural ancestral diet.

Merrick also crafts limited ingredient diets that remove troublesome foods that trigger food allergies and sensitivities in cats. [2]

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Merrick creates, cooks, and tests each formula in its Hereford, Texas facility.

It uses fresh, wholesome ingredients sourced from trusted local farmers, ranchers, and suppliers in the USA. And animal proteins included in its products are high-quality USDA-certified meats or freshly-caught seafood.

Merrick products are manufactured in the USA and are subject to the company’s strict safety and quality standards. Each batch is tested multiple times during the manufacturing and production process.

The company’s Hereford kitchen is a Level 3 SQF (Safe Quality Food) facility. This means all products are continuously inspected for quality, safety, and legality. [3]

Today, Merrick monitors and enhances its safety and quality practices by working with establishments such as NSF International, HACCP, and SQF.

Ingredient Quality

Ingredients

Despite its larger competitors, Merrick outperforms most brands on ingredients quality.

Each diet starts with real, premium animal meat for high-quality nutrition. Real animal proteins should always be the foundation of an obligate carnivore feline’s diet.

Premium animal proteins ensure rich protein concentrations, fatty acids, and essential amino acids. Protein plays a crucial role in your cat’s overall health by aiding muscle development, hair growth, joint health, and other essential bodily functions.

These ingredients are joined by wholesome fruits and vegetables for high-quality antioxidants, minerals, and nutrients.

Some critics argue cats thrive on a raw food (BARF) diet. While others argue that certain vegetables act as natural sources of fiber and antioxidants that aid immune and digestive function.

On occasions, some formulas contain nutraceuticals. These pharmaceutical alternatives offer added nutritional support for everyday health problems.

For example, some recipes include therapeutic ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin for joint and bone support. Others may include probiotic cultures that stimulate healthy bacteria in your cat’s tummy or concentrated sources of omega-3s to manage inflammation.

One thing you’ll never see on any formula is an unnamed ingredient. Every ingredient is clearly labeled, so you know exactly what you’re giving to your feline friend.

Most formulas exclude common allergens and low-quality fillers such as corn, soy, and wheat. However, the company does craft grain-inclusive recipes too. Merrick always ensures its products are made free of artificial ingredients, instead using botanicals.

Controversies and Legal Issues

In general, Merrick receives a lot of praise. However, over the years, the company has been subject to legal issues and controversies.

In 2016, a class-action lawsuit was sought against Nestle-Purina and Merrick Pet Care for falsely labeling their products. The lawsuit accused the companies of including vitamins and minerals from other countries, despite being labeled “USA-sourced.”

As we previously covered, Merrick uses wholesome foods from local farms in the USA.

But, many pet food manufacturers will use foreign-sourced vitamins and mineral premixes to fortify their products. There is no legal requirement for manufacturers to disclose where the minerals used in their products are mixed. [4,5]

Merrick was also included in an FDA investigation into specific grain-free diets and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). Merrick was named in 16 brands potentially linked with causing this heart disease. [6]

However, it’s worth noting that no substantial evidence has been established yet. To date, the investigation is still ongoing.

Since then, Merrick’s in-house team of nutritionists and veterinarians has reviewed each product to ensure its safety. Each product contains added sources of taurine to help limit the risk of DCM in cats.

Merrick Cat Product Ranges

Merrick offers several diets designed to meet the unique needs of your feline friend.

Before switching or making any changes to your cat’s diet, consult your veterinarian.

Merrick Backcountry

Merrick Backcountry products are one of the company’s most popular product lines. They use novel, exotic proteins for healthy doses of protein that replicate your cat’s ancestral diet.

This range features both grain-free and grain-inclusive diets.

Cats with grain sensitivities should choose a grain-free diet. At the same time, felines seeking additional digestive support may benefit from the extra fiber from whole grains.

Each product is freeze-dried raw coated to boost flavor and nutrients, no matter which you choose. Your cat gets the benefits of a raw diet in the form of a convenient commercial dry food.

Deboned meat is the first ingredient in the recipe list of each product. These protein-dense meats are the clean combination of flesh and skin, and the head, feet, and entrails are removed.

Each diet contains a balanced blend of omegas for skin and coats, taurine for optimal heart health, antioxidants that improve wellbeing and immune health, and probiotics for digestion. Every product is free of artificial ingredients too.

Merrick promises your cat will love this product range. So, if you’re not happy with the diet, the company offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee and will issue you a refund on your purchase.

Merrick Limited Ingredient Diet

Merrick’s limited ingredient diets provide tailored nutrition for cats that suffer from specific food allergies or sensitivities. These simple recipes are made with as few as ten ingredients.

Cats who suffer from food allergies often need a limited ingredient formula to eliminate common allergens from their daily meal. Merrick fortifies the vitamins and minerals in each recipe to ensure it still meets specific daily nutrient profiles set out by AAFCO.

These high-quality products use a single protein source, which is always found as the first ingredient.

Dry food formulas use either tuna or chicken. While wet foods use chicken, duck, salmon, tuna, or turkey. If your cat suffers from chicken allergies, choose an alternative diet.

Like all Merrick products, these diets exclude corn, soy, wheat, and artificial ingredients. These troublesome foods are often linked with causing adverse reactions in sensitive cats.

Merrick Purrfect Bistro

Purrfect Bistro is Merrick’s staple cat product range. These highly palatable products are available in both wet and dry formulas. Plus, cat parents can choose either a grain-free or grain-inclusive diet depending on preference.

Each of its recipes starts with deboned meat, poultry, or fish for rich concentrations of protein and nutrients that support healthy muscles.

Nutritious whole fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, carrots, and sweet potatoes help balance the diet. These ingredients also provide powerful antioxidants that boost immune health. And grain-inclusive formulas use whole grains like brown rice for natural fiber sources.

Each formula meets the daily nutrient requirements for all life stages. Every recipe offers joint, skin, and coat support from high levels of omega fatty acids, chondroitin, and glucosamine.

The product range’s grain-free varieties may be ideal for cats with gluten sensitivities. But, cats with heart problems should try an alternative due to the potential links to DCM.

Top Three Merrick Cat Food: Reviewed

To better understand the brand, we’ve compiled a list of the best formulas made by Merrick. We’ve considered each formula’s ingredients’ quality, consumer reviews, and price when picking out the best.

Here are the top three popular dry and wet formulas manufactured by Merrick.

1. Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Chicken Pate Canned Cat Food

  • Grain-free recipe featuring protein-dense chicken as the first ingredient
  • Packed with omega fatty acids and essential amino acids
  • Made in the USA
  • Contains no corn, wheat, soy, grains, gluten, or artificial ingredients
  • Has a unique texture appealing for most fussy eaters
  • Complete and balanced formula for all ages and sizes
  • It has several plant-protein sources
  • Contains chicken, a common allergen known for triggering some food allergies

If your furry friend prefers the unique texture of wet formulas and loves the taste of chicken, then this recipe is the perfect choice for them.

Real, deboned chicken kicks off the ingredients list. This easily digestible animal protein is an excellent source of glucosamine and chondroitin that aids cartilage tissue growth around your cat’s joints.

Chicken is also rich in selenium for immune health and vitamin B6 for red blood cell growth. Cats cannot synthesize and store vitamin B6 in their muscles and need a consistent source to prevent deficiencies.

Dried cranberries contribute beneficial concentrations of dietary fiber that will improve your cat’s digestion by growing live bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract. Cranberries are a natural source of prebiotics that’ll ensure cats get the maximum nutritional benefits.

The formula features a targeted blend of vitamins and minerals to ensure it meets the daily nutrient requirements of all life stages. Supplemented taurine is included to prevent DCM risk associated with grain-free diets.

Like all Merrick products, this canned cat food is made in the company’s Hereford, Texas facility. It is made without artificial ingredients and contains no corn, wheat, soy, or grains.
